The use of alcohol, tobacco, and other substances is one of the biggest problems of adolescence because adolescence is the period when important physical, emotional, behavioural, and other changes take place, which determine one or another way of lifestyle.
Young people, especially teenagers can struggle to control themselves, so they often go through crises. To deal with them they look for spiritual closeness between close and beloved people. In cases where they don’t find help and understanding, they might try to cope with the help of all kinds of stimulants – alcohol, and drugs.
Chapter I of the Handbook for Substance Abuse will look into this issue, discussing dependence, abuse and addiction, as well as the ways of how the school can offer support in such situations.
